From Discouraged to Confident: A Wonderful Introduction to Sewing Clothes

As an experienced sewist who has taught quilting and bag-making classes, I was surprised by how apprehensive I felt about sewing clothing for myself. In the past, the garments I made were often disappointing from a fit perspective, and I felt really discouraged. Closet Core Patterns’ Learn How to Sew Clothes course was exactly what I needed. It provided an excellent introduction to sewing garments with woven fabrics, while also giving me the confidence to approach fit in a more thoughtful and achievable way. Since taking the course, I’ve successfully made a top, a pair of shorts, and pants — all of which have become staples in my wardrobe. I’m now feeling genuinely motivated to keep sewing clothing as part of a more mindful approach to my lifestyle and fashion choices. This course would be a great fit for a total beginner, but also for an experienced sewist who wants a supportive, practical refresher before diving into garment sewing.

I was asked to leave a review after “25 days,” which made me laugh a bit, because I actually bought this course about three or four years ago! But in a way, that makes this an even better review. This course is what got me into sewing, and I can wholeheartedly recommend it. It covers all the basics in a really clear, approachable way, and the included patterns are genuinely good. I still use them now. In fact, the Ciello top I made from this course is one I’ve sewn over and over again. It’s become one of my absolute favourites. So if anything, reviewing it years later just proves the point — I’m still sewing, and it all started here.

I have been getting back into sewing for the first time in a long time and have been trying projects independently for about a year. This course really helped me round out my knowledge at the “confident beginner” level. The only point I’d suggest would be if the videos could be easily made to reverse or fast forward — in my case the would only start again from the beginning if I wanted to do so. Otherwise, very helpful.
