Daiwa Saltist mated with Shimano Terez
So I received my Shimano Terez Surf Spinning rod the other day. I mated it with the Daiwa Saltist 5000 MQ real I purchased over the past winter. I decided on the 7'2" Terez as a Medium-Light fast action rod to work with this reel specifically for catching large speckled trout while wade fishing in the Chandeleur Islands of Louisiana. We free-line croakers and catch trout men only dream of. Today was the day and the combination performed exceptionally. I had been fishing a Shimano Twin Power 10000SW reel mated with a Daiwa Proteus 7'6" Medium-Heavy Fast-Action rod with 85# Power Pro braided line but it lacked the throw that I really needed. It would get out there but not quite as far as I needed. So I set the Saltist/Terez rig up with 50# J-Braid which is the smoothest casting braided line I've ever used. The rod is shorter but the medium-light action allowed me to really put the bait out there and the results were spectacular. We caught 75 trout all inside a 20-25" size and the action was superb. I did lose a few fish to line and leader breakage but these were likely sharks which are much more aggressive than trout. We did lose a few fish to sharks so they were there but I did see a couple of trout go airborne and then break the line that were in the huge category. The Saltist/Terez rig performed spectacularly. I think the Shimano rod being a medium-light action allowed me to gain the distance in casting but was still stiff enough that I had no problem setting the hook and landing the fish. It was 4" shorter than I have been using and combined with the longer surf rod handle detracted from the casting power that could be achieved using this rod design. But for wade fishing it was perfect.
