I have found the product easy to use. I have taken an assignment in India. I drink even the bottled water through the straw to help reduce microbiological and chemical contaminants. The straw is a backpackers tool. It is lightweight. I typically filter the water, whatever the source, through two or more handkerchiefs to remove large particles. Then I fill the canteen that fits to the straw with "dirty" water. I can then filter it when needed straight into my mouth or cup. So far no failure has occurred and the water has no smell or bad taste. The main purpose for me was filtering bottled water to remove chemicals. I always have a backup in case I can not get bottled water, I can complete the same process with tap water or river water. A great tool to have if water is possibly not a reliable or certified supply. I really don't like city water, even in the USA, because of the chemicals added in potable water processing. I have boiled water in India from the tap, and let it cool, there is a white powder that is formed I am not sure what it is. Most of it is removed by the handkerchiefs, I feel certain the straw is providing an extra measure of purified water. I have the carbon filter also.

This filter overall in my opinion, is absolutely perfect. Bought a good amount of them and extras for the filter.
