What a difference Tech makes!
I made the jump from a Garmin S12 to the Garmin S70. Although my S12 worked well for helping with shot distances, the S70 is a huge step forward. I’ve played two rounds with the S70 to date. I can honestly say I’m really liking the S70. As most GPS devices it is extremely accurate. But the large color touch screen is making it a joy to use compared to my old black and white button style controls. I always struggled using the S12 with the 4 side buttons, as I could never remember which buttons did what when I was on the course. My experience with the Scorecard feature has been great. Prior to setting out on my first round with the S70 I told my partner that I would keep my score on my S70, and asked him to keep score on the paper scorecard. Post round the paper scorecard matched my S70 scorecard. I always struggled using the scorecard feature on the S12. I think the touch screen feature on the S70 makes it that much easier to keep up with the scorecard. I’m finding the shot tracking to be accurate without using the Garmin Approach CT1, or CT10 (Automatic Club Tracking Sensors). However, without them you will have to manually tell the S70 which club you just used after every shot. Doing the tracking manually isn’t the worst thing in the world, as the watch will ask you after each shot. However, it would be much more convenient with the sensors. I love the post round data the S70 gives you. You can see your shot data and hole-by-hole shot locations using the Garmin Golf app, or Garmin Connect. It is really interesting to review your round using these apps. There are so many features on the S70 it will make your head spin. Besides golf, I have been utilizing the health tracking data that the watch provides. Just having a sleep tracker has improved my sleep, because I’m paying more attention to the amount and quality sleep I’m getting. I realize I sound like a Garmin fanboy, and maybe I am, but once you dip your toe into the Garmin eco-system, it is difficult to go outside that world. Honestly when I bought my S12, I had sticker shock. But after using it for a year, I realized the value and convenience to having a GPS watch, as opposed to a cart GPS system. I guess that is how I justified the price for the S70. Pricey, yes. But is it making a difference in my golf game, yes. And that is all I was really looking for to begin with.
