As annoying as this may be, I've never smelled the original. However, I like fougeres so I will be reviewing it from that perspective. I'll start with the late dry-down past about 4-5 hours. The late dry-down is green and woody. Very standard of most fougeres, and this is what most people would say classifies this fragrance as a fougere. However, the opening into the mid dry-down is very interesting. The fragrance has a very dry herbal character, kind of like what you'd smell if you smelled a cabinet full of dry herbs. However, this herbal character is made very distinct with the use of tobacco and incense. It makes the fragrance very dark, and may be off-putting due to smelling like an "old man." Not that this smells bad, but it reminds people too much of fragrances that men used to wear in the 80s. Most people would classify this as an older gentleman's fragrance. This is also supposed to have lavender and honey, but I don't detect much of this. If it is there, it seems to just mellow out the fragrance, but it is not very detectable. If you choose to blind buy this and it seems too "old," I'd recommend layering it with a sweeter floral or iris fragrance, I've tried it and it works really well. This fragrance is fairly strong and lasts 8+ hours. I think fougere d'argent is a much better fragrance that has more of a dark woodiness rather than green woodiness+incense/tobacco/herbs and smells much more modern. I have yet to purchase the fougere d'argent clone on Dua, though.
