I’d already installed the shift shop and bushing. I tried to do this short shifter at the same time but I didn’t have great access. Two weeks later I tried again. Got the car positioned in the garage a little better.
I did this on the floor with the front on jack stands. With better positioning and clearance I was able to complete the job. The original roll pin was harder to drive out than I expected. Put your punch in the female end of a 3/8 extension, makes it easy to reach and drive the pin out.
Following the instructions, I started the pin in the new shifter. Once it was on the shaft I inserted a toothpick through the roll pin and into the hole on the shaft. This keeps the two pieces lined up. Also pretty hard to drive the pin back in. I supports just the awkward angle and space to move. Probably easier on a lift.
Reflections on the operation of the shifter. The shift throw is much shorter. A side effect of this design is less leverage. Meaning it takes more effort to move the shifter. I think I can get used to that because the shifter clicks solidly into each gear. And did I say it significantly reduces the throw distance of the shifter!
I wonder why the original shift lever is so big?
Overall, these three shifter upgrades are a huge improvement over the original design and relatively cheap for what you get in improved functionality.
