A Great Options Without The Weight Penalty
I have the Vittoria Torrente Race tires in a 29" x 2.25" and have tried them out in the Pacific Northwest (USA) in both rainy and semi-dry conditions and they stand out compared to the Vittoria Mezcals that I normally use for all my xc races. I had the Mezcals in a 29" x 2.35" and although a slightly wider tire, the Torrentes do noticeably better in the wet or also dry, hardpack conditions. One thing that really stands out is that the Torrentes shed dirt and mud off the tread than the Mezcals. A lot of the terrain I ride in the fall and winter months is wet roots, leaves on trail, clay soil and occasionally sandy sections and the Torrentes definitley have much less sliding around than the Mezcals. I think the Mezcals are a great tire for when you don't need wet/moist tire tractions as they roll real easily under those conditions. But if you're looking for a tire that will rival many trail specific tires without the weight penalty, the Torrentes are an excellent choice.
