Piranha: BAD fish, GOOD fin
I deliberately tested the Piranha on single-fin wave/B&J boards (no fair testing it with training wheels) in wide-ranging wind and surface conditions to be sure it got underpowered, overpowered, and sweetly powered in both smooth and very rough spots in the Columbia River Gorge. I played deep off the wind fully powered, then pushed it hard upwind, caromed > 90 degrees off a swell lip, and ripped downwind again, linking S-turns with the hammer down. I also slogged it in way too many lulls and punched it back onto a plane in the the next gust. The Piranha performed well in every such situation, with no surprises. It slashed and jibed widely and tightly, at my beck and call. I found not one thing to complain about, as long as there are no weeds around. OTOH, I also found nothing unique to rave about in its performance, compared to other very good fins. It’s obviously a very high quality fin with impressive material, construction, and finish, but I’d have to test it extensively head to head with the same fin design minus the teeth to evaluate their advantages. While it’s in good company with other fins well-matched to my sailing style, I can’t say whether it’s better than other very good fins that lack the teeth. But while I’m very good at what I do on the water, I'm not a pro windsurfer or even a good down-the-line wave sailor. My opinions are thus more subjective and less fine-tuned than those of full-fledged experts. This fin suits my demands very well, but not better than some toothless fins.
