I keep a data spreadsheet on every knife I sharpen. It’s the only way I know to identify issues and produce repeatable good outcomes. What’s emerged, is that some higher HRC ( greater than 60) steels are difficult to finish with ceramic stones. Likewise you will wear out synthetics, or you can damage the edges of some high vanadium steel knives if you try to use them to finish. Using resin coated diamonds or CBN’s seemed to be the logical choice. CBN stones, produce a finer finish than diamonds and are reputed to last longer than diamonds. I’ve used this stone as a finisher 3 times now and it has not disappointed. I use a small amount of Norton honing oil as a lubricant.

These stones are superb. I love the binder as it helps them leave a nice scratch pattern, provide great feedback and not be so harsh as to cause carbide pullout. All in all they will sharpen anything and excel at the toughest jobs like Hap40, Rex121, Maxamet and Magnamax. They require just a little infrequent cleaning with a lap or two with a nagura. I used mine right out of the box, a purist might give them a pass or two over a glass plate with some SiC powder.

Great product. I have not found any contamination in my 9 stones. If you want high quality stones you won't be disappointed with these.
