Worth it
I rarely review anything but I know how important hikers are to. . . . hikers! My feet are like Flinstone feet, rather squarish so a wide toe box is a must. But, there are not a lot of zero drop shoes that really work for me. The only one is the Altra Lone Peaks, but I did not like the boot version of that shoe. I have the Lem's Chelsea boot but I use inserts so it's not totally zero-drop. I need a bit of a rise, especially for a cushioned shoe. (I already have two pairs of the Topo recovery shoe, which I love. I wear the clog as slippers. ) When it came time for new hikers -- I used to wear Salomon's but they're just not wide enough -- I did a lot of research and read a lot of reviews and took a chance on these. I'm glad I did. Topo fits true to size, but I went up a half size to an 8. 5 because I was going to spend long days hiking, sometimes over a 1,000 metres up. I wanted room for feet that might swell a bit, or thick socks if it was cold. These hikers were fantastic out of the box. I just spent 2 weeks hiking in the Yukon and have absolutely no complaints. They were grippy, comfortable, and warm on the chillier, rainy days. But not too warm with light wool socks on the warmer days. And I did not want to fling them off my feet at the end of a 15 km hike. I wanted to put on my Lone Peaks, yes, but any shoe after hours on the trails needs to come off. My next pair of low hikers will be Topo. I already bought a pair of sneakers and I love them too.
