Rhinokey® Smartcard

Excellent device

Beautifully designed to fit inconspicuously in my wallet or bag. Battery life seems to be holding out well. We get a customed to immediate live satellite based GPS real time location for tracking and it is taking me time to trust this Bluetooth tracking, which relies on random people being close to my devices or car. No issues of concern yet. Some difficulty setting up and had to reset one tracker a couple of times. It's a shame Apple and Android operate separate networks. My evaluation continues.

Almost perfect

The card is thin and works as promised, right out of the box. The only catch is that Google's Find My Device network relies on crowdsourced Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) detection, so coverage is a lot thinner outside cities. Locating the card through your own phone is quick and easy, but if your phone isn't nearby, the network needs other Android devices in range to pick up the tag's signal and relay its location before it shows up. It can even happen indoors, at home, with other Android phones present on the network but the location still won't update, since Google appears to require detections from several separate devices before it will report a position, not just one. My guess is this is a deliberate privacy threshold, similar to the k-anonymity aggregation Google has described for the network, meant to prevent a single nearby phone from being used to track someone's tag in real time. That's also why it's much rarer to get a location update in the countryside or along highways, there just aren't enough devices passing by to hit that threshold, even on busy roads. Anyway, the card does what it promises and feels like a reliable device.

So far I have only activated 1 card and put it with 1 who's battery is soon to die. The Rhinokey gives me all the same facilities as the old one but with the added bonus of being rechargeable and not needing a subscription for many of its uses. Highly Satisfied and quite accurate.
