Lansky sharpeners work great. However, they are small. This means that they “dish” and degrade quickly. The extra-coarse, black honehas a tendency to fill in with smaller particles and must be cleaned to maintain its efficacy. If unmaitained it will behave more like a sub-medium grit. I have used a lapping stone to correct this but it is easier just to but a new one at these prices The coarse red hone tends to degrade. I am unclear as to the manufacturing process, but based on the way they degrade it would seem that the grit is applied to a substrate in a millimeter thick layer. Once this wears off the blank is of unknown coarseness and grit, but it is certainly no longer behaving like red coarse lansky hone. I just replace these.
