Nearly Perfect Replacement for Old HydroFlame furnace in 1983 Lance Camper
I had to modify the inside entry facade and the exhaust pipe/fresh air intake plate on my 1983 Lance Truck Camper as this Suburban furnace is a little wider and shorter than the old HydroFlame furnace that is no longer available as a new item. At $500 it was by far the cheapest option I found and so far - the furnace lights right up in just seconds after the propane valve relays open. It does give off a slight smell when first using it so I do recommend that you run the furnace for a while - maybe for a couple hours over a few days period - to burn off that smell - before going on a trip. The furnace runs just a few minutes at a time before it heats up the camper so you cannot continuously run it for 2 hours as the thermostat will turn off the propane as soon as it gets the camper warm. In either case new parts like the heat exchanger do put off an odor of burnt metal which I believe is normal for this unit but the smell will burn its self out after a while. A small inconvenience for such a good furnace that should last years. I did use some aluminum foil tape - several layers - to cover the old exhaust plate opening as the new dual pipe openings were to the side of the old HydroFlame exhaust single opening. It doesn't look the best - but it is a 1983 Lance Truck Camper that had an old Piezo heater which I promptly got rid of! Anyway - the furnace works great and has a the advantage of a fresh air intake for the combustion chamber that the original HydroFlame never had which means the new furnace is slightly more efficient in that it doesn't suck a bunch of your inside heated air out of the camper in to the combustion chamber.....
