I am amazed by the warmth and clarity of the sound in this recording. As I am playing in it, I will not comment on the performances and only write about the recording. My first Binaural experience: fantastic positioning of the players in the quartet. As if I am sitting in the Lutheran Church in Haarlem again!

Like peeling varnish from a lovely painting

Beethoven's Opus 18 string quartets are, even though 'early' works, masterly exercises in the genre. Listening to this recording is like hearing these gorgeous pieces of music for the very first time: the period instruments and style of playing (extensive use of portamento) make one sit up and marvel anew at Beethoven's genius. The instruments are captured with stunning clarity, warmth, and precision when played back as DSD 256. A highlight of 2024.
