Not Quite the Same
Having read Outrage, I had high hopes for the Infinity graphic novel series. Outrage had, I thought, interest characters in Emily and Knauf, with enough nuance and complexity to move an otherwise simple plot forward in a compelling way. I had similarly expected a story now focused on Uhahu, one of the more likeable but arguably less-developed characters in Outrage, to give her the depth and complexity portrayed in her prior story partners. And the story does, somewhat. Uhahu is fantastic and is a very nuanced and interesting character. The problem is that she lacks another strong character to play off of. Denma, while having the makings of a fantastic foil and father figure to the immature and impulsive Uhahu, unfortunately is mostly relegated to jumping in front of her in the first few panels of a combat scene while having some how lost his shirt. Ikikomori, likewise, has a compelling backstory but does little to contribute to the narrative or its stakes. Overall, Aftermath is fine. It's a competent heist story in the vein of "Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels" or "Heat" told competently, but it never reaches the same high highs or low lows as Outrage. It's a solid B- or C+, since some of the paneling in the action sequences can be a bit frenetic and hard to follow. If you like the Infinity Universe and you want to get more of it, even a little sliver (and see some old...friends...from Outrage), give it a read.
