A standout compressor

This is a very special one even with the standard of Z&H Designs itself. On this design I see so many great features beyond the original, making it a staple in almost all my projects these days. Sound Quality I wasn’t fortunate enough to own an original 1178, but I do have an Audio Scape on my rack. I have no complaints with either AS or Z&H when it comes to sound quality. You get what you expect from an 1178 – effective and faithful compression. Extra Features This is where Z&H surpasses all other alternatives in the market. The blend (mix) function is a must-have today, as is the HPF. The M/S mode, with separate attack and release controls, is legendary. It completely changed my workflow, not to mention the ratio button combinations, which add the missing "style" to the 1178's sound character. As long as you’re not looking for a specific type of harmonics or iconic colors unique to another vintage design, this 1178 has it all. Build Quality The sound demo was impressive enough to catch my interest, but it was the build quality that pulled the trigger. Showing the PCBAs was promising, and offering the components for sale went even further. How many brands claim to be proudly designed and handmade somewhere, but won’t let us see inside? With the real device on my rack, I feel it rivals boutique brands in every aspect. Overall, I’m very happy with my purchase.
