Perfect fit in my library.
I am an elementary school librarian in Port Hueneme, CA and this book was a welcome addition. Our town has a view of the Channel Islands and our fourth graders have the opportunity to study and take a field trip to Santa Cruz Island every year. Just having the book on my desk created quite a stir with children that had already visited... The rhyming text appeals to the listeners as I read aloud, the older children appreciated the facts they already knew and enjoyed learning the ones they hadn't covered. I thought this would serve as a springboard for them to ask questions, but instead it fueled their own discussions since they were already 'in the know'. The pictures are beautiful and indicative of the illustrator's background study and affinity for the islands. It took a long time to read the book to classes because the children would get excited about the pictures... "Oh look, that's the island fox. We saw lots of them and Zachary got in trouble for trying to chase them." I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the book. It's large with quality binding, flyleaves, pages, and the vibrant colors. Very well done and looking forward to my next WildStork purchase.
