Kite Optics APC stablized 17-35 ED spotting scope
The scope has nice optics with a clear and flat image that remains bright throughout the mag range. Stabilization is excellent, even at 35x. The kite comes with a nice case and a hand strap that helps prevent accidents while holding. Nice touch. The instrument is very solid and compact at less than 12 inches in length. It also comes with an 18 inch monopod that screws into the under side and is intended as an assist in holding the instrument. I have only used the scope for few days and find the monopod helpful but not a great solution. Instead of using the monopod, I hold the scope by positioning my hand underneath the center while tucking my arms close to my body. The real value of the scope, in my view, is the portability and quick accessibility. I can carry it in its case (using the included strap) thrown over my shoulder with most of the weight on my back. I like to go on nature hikes using my binos for initial observation. Having the spotting scope ready to go with greater mag whenever needed is great. Those ducks across the pond or that hawk sitting on a distant pole are now in close view. No transport and set-up of a tripod. Just grab the scope and use it. The con: the weight. At 46oz I find it is fine for casual observation, but you notice the heft with long, continuous observation. It is not for everybody. My wife struggled to support it with one hand and adjust with the other. Digiscoping with your phone is also an issue. It would be a juggling act positioning the image with one hand while focusing the scope and working the camera with the other. Of course, it can be mounted on a tripod like any other spotting scope, but that defeats the virtue of internal stabilization.
