Most people view Oman as a difficult place to visit, primarily because it is on the Arabian peninsula and partly because it seldom makes the news in the US. For those wishing to step into the Empty Quarter and visit the stomping grounds of Thessiger, Oman is the easiest country from which one can access the area. Same goes for the mountain country near Muscat. The Lonely Planet guide lays it all out for those wishing to get into the seldom visited backcountry.
