Modena Trainer
I am very conflicted about this shoe. On one hand, it looks nice, has really premium feeling materials, and it fits my feet well. I can tell it will be comfortable to wear for longer periods of time than some of my other Piloti shoes. I also appreciate that it is light weight. However, it has a couple of issues that make it hard to recommend as a “driver’s shoe” which I thought was the primary focus of the Piloti brand? Specifically, the forefoot is very wide, which means it’s less than ideal for cramped foot wells, especially on manual transmission cars. The sole also has sharp edges, rather than the rounded edges of some other Pilot models. I found it getting caught during “heel-and-toe” maneuvers. I don’t see what the extra width in the sole is contributing to the comfort of the shoe so I think you could make it narrower. Secondly, there is extra material in the sole of the shoe behind the heel. So while the heel is nicely rounded, the extra material means it doesn’t feel like a natural pivot for the throttle pedal. I have been driving in Piloti shoes since the mid-2000s. The Prototipo model was one of the all time greats, and I currently have 2 pairs of the Shift model which are also really good driving shoes. I think with some refinement the Modena could be as good as a driving shoe as some of your other models with better comfort.
