Better(lighter) than I thought. I put the pack through an improtu waterboarding torture test to see if I could avoid a liner sack. Worked great no seam leaks. Should have pull the trigger sooner.

My pack for life!
I wish I had picked up the Hyperlite Southwest 40 years ago—this pack exceeded my expectations in both comfort and functionality. The size large fit was spot-on for my 19.5-in torso length, and I found it surprisingly comfortable even when carrying around 30-lbs, which is impressive for an ultralight pack. I have used a wide variety of packs in my 30 years backpacking and this pack is by far the best!
One of the standout features is the pocket design. The large exterior pockets make it easy to stay organized and keep frequently used items within quick reach, which really improves efficiency on the trail. I also appreciated the generously sized hip belt pockets—they’re perfect for snacks, a phone, or other small essentials you want handy without stopping.
The simple roll-top closure is another big plus. It’s straightforward, reliable, and keeps everything well-protected without adding unnecessary complexity. Combined with the durable materials, it gives confidence in a range of weather conditions.
Comfort-wise, the wider shoulder straps made a noticeable difference. They distribute weight well and remained comfortable throughout long days on the trail.
Overall, the Southwest 40 is a thoughtfully designed, high-performance pack that balances simplicity, durability, and comfort. This will be the only pack I use from now one...I only wish I had made the switch sooner!

Greatest buy ever
It's amazing it is 6lbs lighter than my other backpack. It's a total game changer. I never thought I could get all of my overnight things that I carried in my 100 liter pack, but I did with room to spare. It's a great product.
