Wonderful series sequel
This is a great continuation of the series that started with Manners and Monsters. The characters are largely the same, though there are fewer high society ladies and more mad scientists. I really enjoyed seeing both Hannah and Viscount Wycliff grow and evolve as characters, though there's still plenty of room for them to continue to grow during the rest of the series. (Also, it appears that this will be a series romance, not a book-based one. Their relationship is evolving along with their characters, but they don't have anything like a working partnership yet, much less a love match. (Though I feel that it will get there. I have predictions for the series finale, but I won't go into them here because they involve both spoilers and speculation.) The book's specific plot is interesting in how it sets up the conflict along with 4 different possible "mad scientist" types as options for the culprit. Some have less science in their character than others, but all seem plausible. And one of the options is Hannah's father, which throws a wrench into the stability of life at the Miles home. The book's summary blurb makes it sound like Hannah and Wycliff are on opposite sides of the "is Sir Hugh to blame?" question, but that's not really true, and I appreciated that Hannah was able to set aside some of her anger at her dad being accused in order to work with Wycliff to discover who the culprit was, because the times when they are working together are some of my favorite parts of these books so far.
