Have your cake and stomp it too
This is a very cool Muff style fuzz, it was supposed to be a birthday present but my wife was to excited to give it to me after emailing back and forth with Emilie and picking out a very cool custom pink JoJo cake with a special message on the side. This is my first Jonny Rock Gear pedal and my fourth pedal from GupTech and I have to say I’m impressed. Before even plugging in the quality of the jojo cake is tangible. It has a very nice weight to it, and exceptional feel to the controls, firm but not stiff. The graphic and a very cool and looks extra birthday cake-y over the custom pink enclosure Emilie and my wife picked out (one of my most recent guitar projects is a pink 80’s peavey nitro that turned out pretty cool and is almost the same shade of pink). The JoJo Cake has a nice big wooly tone as you would expect from a muff-style fuzz but does a great job of retaining note clarity. I’m really enjoying using it paired with the pPTSD to play big open chord fuzzy riffs in the style of Dinosaur Jr. to thick single note Electric Wizard style riffs. It’s also great for a nice smooth and sustaining lead tone. The pPTSD if you’re not familiar is a super powerful 3 band parametric eq made by GUPtech. (I’m using the pPTSD very lightly just to boost my preferred frequencies a little but these two combined could be used to create some really great and varied fuzz tones). The JoJo Cake has become my go to fuzz on my pedalboard and at the moment is my go to dirty tone for most things. If you’re looking for a fuzz that can clean-up when you roll the volume down or has a Hendrix-y fuzz tone something like the Phoque Face may work better for you (Phoque Face is the second stop on my board after a passive volume control, my favourite clean tone is the Phoque face with the guitar volume rolled back just a touch, it’s also great wide open for classic fuzz tones). If you’re still reading this and considering the JoJo Cake I honestly recommend it. It actually replaces a very cool, pricy, boutique pedal I picked up in England a while back. While that pedal I picked up from Macari’s is still my favourite fuzz I’ve ever played/owned and has a different topology than the JoJo Cake, the JoJo Cake in my setup gets me that same big dirty sound I love while still retaining note definition to allow me to play chords mixed with single note lines with clarity.
