Memories from the cradle of railways, let down by poor publication standards
An interesting selection of shots from North Eastern England, the cradle of railways worldwide. Photography in cramped or exposed conditions in an often industrial landscape cannot be expected to produce classic, crisp, superbly lit portraits. However, we can expect the publisher to proof the captions and reproduce the photographs to a high standard. Sadly the book is let down in this respect, the worst example being the distorted photograph of Middlesbrough station on page 148. Despite the defects well worth a look.

Good book
The book is full of evocative pictures especially of the Tyne Dock ore trains. I would have liked to have seen more of Newcastle and Darlington sheds and stations.
