Need a fresh piece of soft wood.

Sorry for the delay, I am 91 and with very limited carving training. I have tried using the knives but the main problem that I had is that the wood was too dry. I had no green or fresh wood to work with. However the curved knife seemed to work well, just could have used a nice fresh piece of green wood.
