This product works well for wrapping a segmented body. because it is clear, you can use a marker in various colors to enhance the pattern you are tying. If it works for Dave McPhail, it will work for you.

Add bulk with transparent look

I use this to tie scuds, adding a little bulk and texture but keeping the underlying color visible.
