We love our new 2x4 evaporator! Went from tapping 10 trees to 30+ trees. The improved boil volume was huge. Very pleased with the construction quality. Very easy to maintain even and consistent heat. Thank you Charlie and crew!!!

I picked up the Bassett 2×4 evaporator this season, and overall, it’s been a strong upgrade from the barrel stove setup I’d been running for years. The build is sturdy, the arch drafts well, and once it’s up to temperature it holds a consistent, rolling boil across the whole pan. For a small operation, it hits a really nice, sweet spot between performance and affordability.
One thing I appreciated right away is how much easier it is to manage sap levels and heat compared to my old rig. The evaporator feels efficient and predictable, and it definitely made my boiling days smoother and more enjoyable. Even without a blower, I was able to evaporate 8 to 10 gallons per hour, which impressed me for a natural‑draft setup.
The wheel kit has also been a big advantage. It made positioning the evaporator simple — just roll it into place instead of wrestling with a heavy arch. And at the end of the season, being able to wheel it out for cleaning and storage was a huge help.
If I had one suggestion for improvement, it would be the divider seams in the pan. They’re not sealed from the factory, and while the pan still works, I think TIG‑welded seams would help promote a cleaner laminar flow and sharper gradient. It’s not a dealbreaker — especially at this price point — but it’s something I plan to address to get the most out of the system.
All in all, the Bassett 2×4 is a solid, well‑built evaporator that delivers great performance for the money. It’s a big step up from DIY rigs, and with a couple small refinements it could easily compete with higher‑priced pans on the market. I’m glad I bought it, and it’s already made my sugaring season more productive and enjoyable.
