During an offshore fishing trip I had the privilege of observing a humpback whale popping her head out of the water about 10 feet from where I fished. Seconds later her baby did the same under the protective eye of mom. Simply exhilarating! As an avid reader of the 18th and 19th century whaling stories and diaries, the whaling harpooners would often strike a baby whale, knowing they would also get the mother as she would not abandon her little one. This, to me, is the ultimate dedication of giving her life to try to help her baby. I believe this is the spirit in which this lovely piece was created.
