Great concert
I think the Brubeck quartet relished live performance at the time, and certainly this concert suggest it. Just a few months before the release of the studio LP Time Out, this is the summit of the 'first period' Brubeck which began in his Jazz Goes to College days with albums like Jazz at Oberlin (1953) with Paul Desmond, and which continued to develop with Joe Morello and then Eugene Wright. Among the adventurous harmonies and rhythms there is a lot of humour with both leads enjoying their typical discoveries of harmonic and melodic connections with other songs - enough for an extended quiz. Even Morello gets in on the act of musical smiles with his Watusi Drums - a model of the drum solo, short, sweet and melodic! I bought this because I saw them live just two years later in January 1961 at the Alhambra Theatre in Bradford, of which I can find no record. Seeing Morello live in particular was fun. I am not disappointed with this earlier mono recording. Highly enjoyable.
