Another great book from Avni
Amatzia Avni is one of my favourite authors and I have been a fan of his chess books for several years. Each book tends to focus on an unusual aspect of playing the game such as 'creativity', 'danger' and 'surprise.' 'Devious Chess - How to bend the rules and win', which I've just finished reading, is no exception. Arranged in a dozen or so sensible chapters the illustrative game positions and studies are carefully selected and are mostly spectacular, inspiring and unusual. I have one complaint though and that is the absence of an index of players and composers which, with around 140 positions to analyze, is so necessary if the book is to be used again for reference. An unfortunate omission. The other six Avni books that I possess all have an index.
