Hapstone R2 Black Knife Sharpener

A great sharpening system with excellent precision and build quality, with one drawback: the central post is not secured in any way; it is simply inserted into the holder from below. This means that when working on a soft surface, the sharpening angle will fluctuate. The fix would be simple and inexpensive: add a locking mechanism for the post, similar to the thickness compensator (ideally, with an eccentric clamp). It is not clear why this was not implemented in the first place. As for assembly, I have two comments. First, the assembly instructions are way too minimalistic. I had to watch a review of the sharpening system by Ibis (sic!) to figure things out. It is completely unclear why the manufacturer does not provide video instructions (and this applies to all of their products, not just the sharpening system itself). Second, the kit includes an Allen key and a hex screwdriver, but there is no Phillips screwdriver (which is needed to remove the central-post holder). You have to buy one yourself, which was quite frustrating because I had to go out and buy a screwdriver just to assemble the system (with precise angle adjuster). A couple of comments about the included accessories. First, the angle gauge feels like an extremely cheap Chinese toy, completely out of place next to the excellent build quality of the system itself. Second, the red marker? :) Sure, it matches the brand colors nicely, but I obviously won't be using it because black provides much better contrast.

An excellent, easy-to-use sharpening system. I switched to the R2 from another system, and the difference is huge. With the R2, you can sharpen almost any blade, regardless of its length and thickness. The sharpening angles are beyond praise. And the icing on the cake is the system's modularity. Kudos to the engineers at Hapstone.
