Easy to install. But look at the screen shot I took from the install video. See those 2 2" wide vertical bars? The ones in that picture are NOT the ones that came in the kit. There are 2 problems with what came in the kit. First, see how in the video shot the vertical bars are bent to the front, so the vertical bars are farther away from where the tire would be? The supplied vertical bars cannot be installed so they bend forward. They can only be installed so they bend aft, towards where the tire will be. You might think you could just turn them around. But there are nut plates welded on the back side, and those nut plates must be on the back. As well, see in the picture there are several pairs of adjustment holes going up each vertical bar? In the supplied bars, because there are nut plates on the back, the actual bars must be installed upside down compared to the video. Secondly, because to install them, the vertical bars must bend aft towards the tire, they come VERY close to hitting my wheel. We moved the tire carrier adjustment as far aft as it would go, and still the distance between those vertical bars and my wheel is less than 1/16". If my wheels were just slightly wider, it would not be possible to carry them on this tire carrier.

Well Built, But Not Perfect

The carrier itself is very solid and does what it’s supposed to do — it takes the stress off the tailgate when running a larger spare tire. That part of the design works well and is the main reason I bought it. The instructions need improvement. Torque specs, install order, and adjustment steps are not clearly defined. The install is not necessarily difficult, but it can be time-consuming because of the lack of clear guidance. The camera mount was the biggest issue on my install. The camera did not fit tightly in the mount and would move around inside the housing. As designed, it did not hold the camera securely in the correct position. I had to modify the mount myself using rubber and epoxy to get the camera to sit correctly and hold position. I have since heard similar feedback from other users. The hardware is mostly coated fasteners, which work, but long-term I could see some rust depending on climate and use. Overall, the carrier structure is strong and it solves the spare tire leverage problem, but the instructions, camera mount design, and hardware quality could be improved.
