This is the moving story of a boy, then man, who is in search of both his earthly and heavenly father. This search is memorably aided not just by the men, but most especially by the women in his life, as seen in the characters of his granny, Mrs Falconer, and Mary St John. While at times the plot drags a little (perhaps a better word is "slows"), and indulges in some Victorianisms like over-sentimentality that seem a little forced today, this remains a hugely rewarding work that well repays any noddings off on the part of the author. As with all Macdonald's works, one gets the sense that one is very close to the Divine. A word should also be said about the quality of these fine books. They are beautiful. I must admit to finding them immensely attractive: the covers are gorgeous, the binding incredibly tight, the paper and print quality of a high standard; in short, they will look magnificent on the shelf. Highly recommended!
