8mm Insulated Socket for Substation Test Engineers
I’m an electrical engineer. I work with electrical substation relaying and controls. This socket is great because I can much better maintain electrical isolation both between me and energized circuits and between the circuits themselves. I use this socket as a 5/16 socket because it’s 3 one thousandths of an inch larger than a 5/16 and makes it easier to work with the 5/16 nuts we use to make electrical connections. The only drawback, and this is specific to my application, is the fact that the socket end is insulated to a thickness that doesn’t allow me to work with the slip links of a states block. I sanded down a 5/8” section of the insulation to a thinner level (it’s now yellow in this section) to allow me to insert the socket between the plastic dividers of a states block such that I can operate the associated 5/16 slip link to open and close circuits. If WIHA tools would consult with us we could develop a set of insulated tools specific to our industry. They would really be a hit because these tools are of high quality and are insulated. We use this socket with Slimline tools and accessories to reduce size and weight of our tool sets.
