How to size a coat correctly

With a 40" chest, I ordered the 42" coat since I bought a waistcoat to wear under the coat. It was very tight in the shoulders and biceps (couldn't hardly raise my arms). My outside shoulder measurement is 47" around and my biceps are 13" around. Hopefully this helps you to determine the right size coat for you. I exchanged it for the next size up; waiting to see how it fits. Otherwise, it's a very good quality coat. I'm very happy with it.

Purchased the Revolutionary war coat with red facings in a size 50. Good fit all round and the coat is a good length also. Ample space in the arms and very well constructed. Quick turn around on my order as well and fast delivery to the UK. I'll be using Samson Historical again. That much is for sure.

Haven’t used it yet in a re-enactment but fits well and is made well!
