Rock Empire PIP Adjustable Lanyard
I’ve been using the Rock Empire PIP Adjustable Lanyard for a while now, and overall I’m really impressed. It’s incredibly light, and the rope is supple and flexible – it doesn’t feel stiff or awkward to handle. Adjustment is smooth and easy, which is exactly what you want mid-route. One unusual feature is that it can just about be released under a small amount of load. That’s something some competitors I don’t think are able to do. I’m not entirely sure if that’s good or bad overall, but I can see it being useful in situations like repositioning yourself to build an anchor or rethread the rope when cleaning a route. If you’re in an awkward stance and need to let out a bit of slack without fully unloading the lanyard, this gives you that ability. I’ve definitely found myself in that kind of scenario before and its bloody awkward to not release it a bit. My only real criticism is the rubber grommet that keeps the carabiner aligned. It feels like a bit of an afterthought its just a generic piece rather than something designed specifically for a carabiner. I’d happily have paid a bit more for a dedicated carabiner with a properly fitted grommet, which would give the whole setup a more refined integrated feel. That said, it’s a solid piece of kit and I’d definitely recommend it.
