Shoyeido Bamboo Charcoal, the finest burning charcoal.
The finest Bamboo charcoal I have used without question, burning both clean and hot, turning to snow white ash afterwards… assuming no user error in Koro preparation. The slight greying on the surface of this bowl is from burying a previous coal somewhat deeply in a Koro that had not had the White Ash appropriately “fluffed” for air content, particularly below the coal. With care these coals burn so beautifully their ash blends perfectly with Shoyeido’s Miyako White Ash, whilst still allowing the bowl to breathe, burn after burn. I have burnt close to two boxes of Shoyeido Bamboo charcoal in this palm sized Marble Koro over the last month or so and any incomplete burning leads to mild discolouration that is easily returned to a near glowing white with just a little attention from a butane burner. The beauty of this Marble Koro, for one, is any slight greying in the ash blends with the colour of the stone. I have had burns last between 1.5 to 2 hours with one of these small coals and an appropriately prepared Koro. The Green Kygarwood and fresh, undried Asian Cedar on the Shoyeido Mica plate in this accompanying image gave up a gloriously rich, complex Green Kygarwood fragrance with subtle Conifer like notes throughout it’s heating time. I have used another Bamboo charcoal for some time and still do as it’s cheap, but it never gets used in this Koro, it would rapidly turn the White Ash grey. If you are looking for the cleanest burning Bamboo coal for your Kodo sessions I don’t know of a better choice of charcoal.
