Stiff, but very constraining on placement.
This lever/mc assembly appears as if it only requires about 17mm of bar width to mount. This is not the case. It really requires 43mm of bar width to mount. There is an additional boss on the back of the unit, which needs to contact the handlebar tube. This is done to stiffen up the assembly, which works very well. The angle of the photos that Shimano has chosen hides this boss. There needs to be a photo taken from the backside and/or top, so it can be seen. In my application I had to cut a 3 x 8mm hole in the front of the grip for the boss to go through. This uses up about 25mm of width of the grip that can no longer be used by your hands.

Awesome levers to replace Magura MT5s
Decided to give Magura MT5s a go on my new bike. The MT5 levers were really inconsistent. They would fade during a ride. At times I would get on them and the levers would flex to the point that I would squeeze my middle finger between the lever and grip. I read that you could swap Magura levers for Shimano and use with the Magura 4 piston calipers (google "Shigura") and so I decided to give it a try. Both use mineral oil and the Magura hyraulic cables fit the Shimano levers so the swap out was pretty easy. You will need to order the Shimano BH90 Hose Bolt and Fitting Unit (Olive, bolt and barb) as they don't come with the levers. Man, what a difference. The XTR levers are rock solid. Totally different riding experience. Stops on a dime, no fading or inconsistency. Install and bleed was simple if you have the right bleed kit(s) and a hydraulic hose cutter. Great ordering experience from Thunder Mountain. Ordered on Sunday. Shipped on Monday from Az. Arrived in NC on Friday. Highly recommend!
