Lughnasa sunset at Cairn S, with its passage stones illuminated. Cairn S is one of just three cairns at the Loughcrew complex of Neolithic passage-tombs in County Meath whose passage points towards the western aspect. In the 1980s, Martin Brennan and his team of observers noted that Cairn S was aligned with the setting sun at Bealtaine in early May and Lughnasa in early August. These were the old cross-quarter days, the halfway points (in days) between the solstices and the equinoxes.

Spirals carved into a sill stone in the chamber of Cairn H, Carnbane West, Loughcrew. These ancient designs were picked onto the surface of this stone some time around 5,000 to 5,500 years ago. Cairn H is one of the smaller passage-tombs on Carnbane, the westernmost hill of the Loughcrew complex in northwestern County Meath. The cairns here are less well-known than those on nearby Slieve na Calliagh, but are no less wonderful in design and decoration.
