I am hesitant to review this book. As a former Shelvoke & Drewry apprentice and for the last twenty years the secretary of the Shelvoke & Drewry Enthusiasts’ Club (see www,shelvoke-drewry.co.uk ) I know more about the company than the average reader of this book. The author describes the book as a monograph and I was unfamiliar with the format of just 30 pages of a small font size text and no paragraph gaps. It certainly was an ambitious project to cover S&D, the Drewry Car Co, Lacre, other Refuse Collection Vehicle manufacturers and gully emptiers and street sweepers all in one slim volume. I found far too many factual errors in the book along with a failure to proof read the text. A much better coverage of Shelvoke & Drewry was given in a book published in 2021 which is only slightly more expensive. From Oxford’s involvement I feel that the description of the product should describe it as a monograph and explain that it is just 30 pages. The many photographs are also in a very small format which will disappoint many readers, I feel sure. But it is a comprehensive introduction to the subjects the author tried to cover. Brian.
