VHS to Digital Service

PROS: 1) The shipping process was pretty easy; I used my own box & packaging material. 2) My box arrived safely. 3) My videos, etc. were returned safely. 4) I got the flash drive I paid for & it works. CONS: 1) This is a TRANSFER ONLY service. That means WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get). In other words, all the flutter, jumps, blank spaces & snow on your videos will come through on your new digital images. 2) The MP4s & other data as sent to me by Heirloom could not be opened on my computer by ANY apps. Luckily I paid for a flash drive because most of the online content was useless. There is absolutely no use to keep up the 90-day cloud access that comes with the purchase. 3) I sent Zip drives which I can no longer open. It turns out I had saved that data elsewhere in other forms, so that was wasted money. Of course, it was my choice to take that risk rather than potentially lose data. 4) When I called for help because I could not open most of the online content, I was told to wait for the flash drive because it would probably work. I was also emailed instructions of things to try, none of which worked. The flash drive came with the completed videos, zips, etc and took a while to arrive. 5) There is no way to edit this content or skip through it except to FFW or drag a cursor. In the past I received movies on DVD with "scenes"--each scene in the original movie becomes a new "scene" you can skip to, and I could copy just one scene if I wanted. If that's "old" technology, I miss it. 6) IMO a flash drive should be included with a certain $$$ amount spent. I spent over $500--it's pretty ridiculous that they charge extra for a $25 flash drive! That would be a great bonus for people spending a huge chunk of money. I just discovered I have the original 8mm movies that had previously been converted to VHS, which Heirloom converted to MP4s for me. I did some more research, and now I know that I want a RESTORATION service, not straight TRANSFER like Heirloom. I highly recommend you look into RESTORATION and figure out if that is what you really prefer. These precious memories from as far back as 1958 deserve more than a jumpy, jerky, faded TRANSFER. They are worth being RESTORED! Yes, it will be more expensive--and so worth it! The best thing I can say about my experience with Heirloom is that it was an expensive lesson showing me what I WANT! And by the way, I have learned that whatever these transfer services happen to be called, most of them are owned by the same umbrella corporation!

We had old movies of our children on VHS and Super 8 video media. Heirloom did a great job creating digital versions of them all. We now have a hard drive filled with memories that had been lost.
