“But officer, I only had a couple drinks with dinner…”
For 30 years, I served as a police officer and detective for a major metropolitan police department. Fewer than 5 years into my career, I began to specialize in DUI investigations, eventually going on to be designated by the Court as a DUI expert and recognized by groups like MADD for my efforts. As a detective, I put together hundreds of cases against drunk drivers. Even before I retired, I began carrying a personal breathalyzer, recognizing that it can be difficult to judge whether or not that last drink may have put me over the limit. I purchased my first breathalyzer at Best Buy, barely more than a toy. While it would show I had alcohol in my system, the accuracy left a lot to be desired, especially after a few months of use. After thay they were practically useless. My first step up was with the BacTrack S80 in 2023. Easy to use, I carried it until it "disappeared" one evening. Now I’ve upgraded to the new BacTrack Eclipse. This is not a toy. It is reliable and accurate. Since retiring, I participate as a “volunteer drinker” in my old agency’s Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement instruction program teaching a new generation of officers how to recognize DUI drivers. We volunteers drink under controlled conditions and, once intoxicated, are examined by the officers who apply what they’ve been taught. Part of the process is being administered breathalyzer tests throughout the day and after every officer examination. The units used by the officers are Cal DOJ certified (with Cal DOJ certified price tags), the same they use in the field in their investigations. After performing the tests with the “official” breathalyzer, I retest using the BacTrack Eclipse. The results have consistently been within .003 of the DOJ certified units. The Eclipse is small enough to fit in a jacket or pants pocket and mouth pieces are inexpensive. It’s been a surprising hit at parties and can even be used in some fun drinking games! I keep mine handy anytime I’m going out where a knowledgeable decision can make a difference in possibly saving a life, much less getting home with my liberty intact. Want to really know your limit? Don’t guess. Get a BacTrack breathalyzer and know for sure.
