Flower cutter broke first time using, clay stuck in intricate parts

Instructions would be ideal on how to avoid clay getting stuck in intricate cutter parts. Upon my first time using the flower cutter pictured, the clay was stuck in the cutter which I had to pick out, and the middle of the flower broke.
