Stainless Sunny Special MK1 Polished // Ruby - Review

The Sunny Special is the leaner and meaner brother of the Original MK1. As the original MK1 was my first ever precision top this review will be somewhat of a comparison between the 2, (my MK1 Original is stainless, machine finished with ruby for comparison).  Naively, I thought the MK1 Original was the peak for a spinning top and the Sunny Special crushed that idea however, I did have a thought that the Sunny Special may take some thunder away from the MK1 Original but that is also not the case, they compliment each other so well, if you’re on the fence about the 2, get both. The MK1 Original makes the Sunny Special feel more, well, special and the Sunny Special makes the MK1 Original feel more origi…..this review is basically writing itself at this point.  If the MK1 Original is the sports car model then the Sunny Special is the race car model with its more aggressive design.  One additional feature for me from the Sunny Special is that it doubles up as a fidget toy in your hand more with its sharper edges and the knurling is so crisp in your hand. I often find myself turning the handle with one hand while the body runs through the fingers of my other hand. I often use Vorso spinning tops as an organic timer and one feature of the Sunny Special is when it ends its spin it makes a more distinct tapping sound due to the way its serrated body hits the spin stations surface, it is a louder sound which is great if you want to use it as a timer. To remind myself of the sound the Sunny Special makes for the purpose of this review I gave it a very gentle spin so I didn’t need to wait too long to hear the sound, which brings me to my next point, which is that the spin time on this is just as great as the MK1 Original. I haven't ever properly timed my spins or tried to go for as long as possible for any of my tops but with a gentle spin it’ll easily go for 8-10 minutes, I’ve seen people online giving it the beans and easily going over 15+ minutes which doesn't surprise me at all. In summary, the Sunny Special is a great balance of simplicity with its origin in the MK1 and extravagance with the complexities only achievable with a high end cnc lathe, a perfect spinning top which is also has more with its in the hand fidget appeal.
