Outdoor Countertop
I used the Concrete Countertop Solutions approach to make a countertop for an outdoor BBQ. I am a reasonably capable DIY person. I found the edge forms easy to use. You do have to be careful so it all fits together tightly. The Z Clips and Fiber Mesh were easy to install. For the concrete I used a sand mix with a Charcoal dye and Z Liqui-Crete. I mixed it per instructions putting the dye in the water first then adding the Z Liqui-Crete followed by the Sand Mix. In hindsight I likely mixed it a bit drier than it should have been. Pouring the mixed concrete into the forms seemed to work well, but because the mix was a bit dry, I should have spent a bit more time making sure the mix filled all the form, especially in the areas around the cutouts for the BBQ and side burner. I ended up with a few voids in those areas. I made a form vibrating tool using an oscillating multi-tool. That worked very well and I ended up with a very few small voids on the visible edges. Leveling and troweling the surface was standard concrete finishing. You do have to be patient as it takes a while for the concrete to set up enough to properly trowel. The form edges snaped off as advertised the next day. I let it set for a week before sanding the surface and applying the Z Aqua-Thane M35. I rolled on three light coats with a day between coats and sanding each coat before applying the next one. The result is a very satisfying surface on the countertop. It was worth the effort!
