During my 10 day, avg 2.5 hr/day on my Rega Planar 10/RB3000/Apheta 3/(upon Rega standard wool felt mat)/mostly audiophile remasters/a one-step recording/Wilson Audio recording Sonatas for Violin & Piano/some initial issue 40 yo LPs in excellent condition : Initially: yes, a different sound w adding the pi Carbon. Identifying the reason for the difference was challenging. After several days: for harmonics below the note fundamental for vocalists with some coarseness in their lower vocal range, that "richness" was filled in/more complete w/o affecting the clarity of their upper range (Bonnie Rait/ Gordon Lightfoot/ect); same for solo violin, cello--not seeming to be louder/colored/distorted, but as authentic extraction of information not heard w/o the pi Carbon. Bonus: The brittle harshness present with violins at higher pitch/volume in symphonic music was reduced to the level that I recall from live performances--while maintaining the same apparent sound volume. Also, pipe organ sounded a bit more "pipey". There was no evident deleterious effect upon sound reproduction with the pi Carbon. The improvements were still evident "around the corner" and up the stairs.
Upon receipt of the pi Carbon, I fully expected to return the mat and to call it equivalent to putting a rubber ring onto a CD. I remained respectfully aware of Rega's advice to beware of aftermarket mats. Could an effect on the VTA caused by the added 0.28 mm thickness of the pi Carbon paper upon the wool felt mat make a difference? Given that both high mass and low mass/high rigidity turntable companies agree that some energy is transmitted into the player, I have formed a hypothesis about the pi Carbon's mechanism of action for bringing previously hidden information to the cartridge.
Your findings may be entirely different than mine. Worth $600? How much more would I need to spend on a new cartridge to get the additional information that I hear with the pi Carbon? Well, I am convinced that the improvements that come to my ear are real, and am keeping this one.
