Missing Peppermint
Scent Execution & Profile
My main issue with Cold Start, and the primary reason for the lower rating, comes down to the scent profile. I was running low on a peppermint focused oil from another brand and picked Cold Start specifically because peppermint was listed as the top note. Unfortunately, I get absolutely zero peppermint from this bottle. Straight out of the bottle, it hits with a heavy, almost medicinal eucalyptus smell reminiscent of an ointment. I was hesitant to apply it, but put it in beard to see if the notes would open up as it warmed on my skin. Still, there was zero peppermint. I even had others smell my beard after application, and nobody could pick up a trace of peppermint. It honestly makes me wonder if I received a defective batch where the peppermint was left out and the eucalyptus was doubled.
Longevity & Performance
The one silver lining with the scent is how quickly it dissipates. Within just a few minutes, the strong eucalyptus faded and wasn't noticeable to me or anyone around me. For me, that quick fade was a welcome relief, though if you actually enjoy the eucalyptus scent, having it vanish that fast would probably be a letdown.
On the performance side, there is much more to like. This is a lighter viscosity oil both in hand and in beard. My personal preference usually leans toward heavier, thicker oils because they help my beard look fuller and hold a style better, but there is definitely a place for a lighter oil in the rotation. This beard oil leaves my beard feeling airy, where you can actually feel and see individual strand separation. Compared to Beard Octane’s older formula with fractionated coconut oil, this current formula has a touch more body while remaining noticeably light.
Final Verdict
I wouldn’t recommend Cold Start unless you are specifically looking for a straight eucalyptus scent and don't mind a quick fade. If you're chasing a true peppermint profile like I was, I am afraid you won't find it here. However, the base formula itself is solid. If you prefer a lighter viscosity oil, Beard Octane is definitely worth checking out, I would opt for a different scent in their lineup though.
