Recommended for a Composition course

I had never heard of Bristol paper yet alone this American brand. During lockdown I was able to discover the range of tuition to be found on YouTube. The outstanding weekly podcasts from the Canadian artist Ian Roberts topped my list. He advocates working out composition by identifying shapes or masses so that you edit information to manageable levels. He constructs fingernail tonal drawings which enable the artist to sort out the problems before any painting starts. I have signed up to a six week compositional course and Strathmore smooth Bristol paper has been recommended. When shading, the smooth surface allows shading with no pattern created in the manufacturing process disrupting the shading exercise. The weight of the paper means it is very strong and the pads are substantial and not easily damaged. There are Bristol paper in Europe but this paper has a heavier weight. I was very pleased that I was able to track down a supplier in the UK. A week into the course I can see the wisdom of the recommendation.
