For over 20 years I have used aluminum oxide rolls on my drum sander and I assumed my results were standard good results. BOY have I been wrong. Switching to a zirconia sanding roll has been like night and day. Less than half the passes thru the drum sander are needed to achieve the same results. It's like using a new and more powerful machine. I will NEVER go back to using aluminum oxide drum rolls again. Totally worth the extra cost.
