Mounting problem

The dimensions of the mini humbucker itself are perfect for the string spacing of an acoustic mandolin. Not wanting to mount it on the spruce top, I envisioned it attached to the end of the fingerboard structure, like a "Johnny Smith" mini humbucker on self-designed brackets. The problem is the aluminum cover increases the size (and weight) so much that it dominates the area visually and is endangered by picking/strumming. I need a protective cover barely larger than the mini bucker that can be tucked up under the fingerboard extension a ways. I may have to give up return it. (It's even "iffy" that the 6-string version could tuck under the string course of my round-neck resonator guitar.)
